Catholic education has been a part of my life since the age of six. I attended Catholic elementary school at the former St. Mary's School in Alpha, followed by high school at the former Phillipsburg Catholic High School (right here in this building!) and then off to a Catholic college.
In 1981, I accepted my first teaching position as a fourth grade teacher in the old St. Philip & St. James School building on South Main Street.
The following year, I accepted my most important teaching position, stay-at-home mom, as we welcomed our first child, John. Our second son, Thomas, joined him, followed by our daughter, Mary Kate.
Commitment to Catholic education did not cease during this time. My husband and I decided that, no matter what the cost or sacrifices we needed to make, our children would attend Catholic school—not an easy challenge in a then single-income family. But we did it! All three of our children attended SPSJ, All Saints Regional, or SSPJ as we are now known. The names and locations may have changed, but the most important element, a traditional faith-based Catholic school education, did not!
In 1991, I was again afforded the opportunity to return to the SPSJ family as the Pre-K teacher. I served as the Pre-K teacher, navigating program and curriculum changes from 3 half days, then to five half days, and finally to five full days.
In 2002, I was asked to move to a first grade classroom. “Who, me? I can't do that!” went through my head. The responsibility of teaching a six-year-old to read and write was frightening! If I didn't succeed, would it affect a child for the rest of his/her life? What if I couldn't do it? Well, I took a leap of faith, and was so glad I did. You see, I fell in love with first grade! It has been my passion ever since! What joy it brings me each year as my students become beautiful readers, mathematicians, scientists, and, most importantly, stewards of their faith.
And from 2002 to present? All three of our children attended Catholic high school and Catholic universities. Two of our children are married, and we have been blessed with three beautiful, amazing grandsons!
And me... still here at SSPJ, helping your child to
Believe, Care and Excel!
